Mossy Oaks Stormwater Project Updates

Posted on: August 6, 2020

Mossy Oaks update: Aug. 5-14

Project recap

(See 2-week lookahead map below)

Despite the work interruption caused by the tropical storm, progress was made this week. The first of two drainage pipes was installed at the drainage outfall on West Royal Oaks. The pipes installed will provide twice the capacity as the old system. Further, additional surveying was conducted on the Spanish Moss Trail, Battery Creek Road, Jane Way and First Blvd.

Next week, installation of improved drainage pipe will continue on West Royal Oaks. Cleanup of the canal along Jane Way and First Blvd. also will begin. Residents will be notified by separate letter regarding the work being done near their homes. Finally, some additional trees will be removed in various parts of the project to facilitate better flow of stormwater.

Also next week, the Project Team will meet with the contractor beginning work in the vicinity of Southside Park which includes Broad Street, Southside Blvd., and Battery Creek Road. More details to follow as they become available.

We remain on track for an on-time and on-budget deliver of this project in the December-January timeframe.

Spanish Moss Trail

As of today, we are forecasting that sheet pile wall installation will begin on the Spanish Moss Trail between Riverside Drive and Brotherhood Road beginning on Aug. 31. This part of the Spanish Moss Trail is in Basin II. Signage detailing detours and closures are being created with the assistance from The Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail. Those who use the trail may expect updates from both the City and the Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail.

Duck Pond

On another note, in the next three weeks residents in the vicinity of Duck Pond may expect brief water outages as BJWSA and the project relocate water lines that are in conflict with stormwater drain lines. Outages will last no more than four hours and residents will be given plenty of advance notice.

Drive carefully

Please exercise caution when driving in the Mossy Oaks area. Construction crews will be working in and around the Spanish Moss Trail, West Royal Oaks, Jane Way, and First Blvd. area either on foot or in slow moving vehicles.

Sign up for Notify Me

Finally, please encourage all those affected by the Mossy Oaks Project to register with the “Notify Me” application found on the City of Beaufort website ( and subscribe to the Mossy Oaks Stormwater Project updates. This will be the mechanism to receive near real-time updates on the project to include urgent issues like unscheduled road closures or utility interruptions.

As always, I’m available anytime to address comments, concerns or questions.
