BEAUFORT, S.C. (Aug. 26, 2020) – The Spanish Moss Trail between Rogers Drive and Broome Lane will close on Aug. 31 to pedestrians and cyclists as construction begins on that phase of the Mossy Oaks Stormwater Drainage Project. Detour signs have been posted by Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail to guide people who use the trail.
Neal Pugliese, who is managing the project, said that a major part of this work includes installing a 1,200-foot-long sheet pile wall and tidal flap gates. The sheet pile wall will be driven into the ground to reinforce the Spanish Moss Trail and prevent water from seeping into residential areas from under the trail. The flap gates attached to stormwater pipes will prevent stormwater from entering residential areas during storms with elevated tides.
During construction residents can expect increased traffic from heavy equipment, as well as noise from the sheet pile installation. The project team will have a better estimate of how long the trail will be closed once construction begins, and will share that information on Facebook, Nextdoor, and Notify Me.
Pugliese said that the work on the Mossy Oaks project is on schedule. “We appreciate everyone’s patience as we know that the end result will be worth the disruptions that residents are experiencing,” he said.
