Work has started on the BJWSA North Street Transmission main project. This design-build project includes a large-diameter water transmission main that will be constructed from Robert Smalls Parkway to Duke Street. The portion of the Spanish Moss Trail over Battery Creek was closed to install two pipes underneath the waterways. It is being reopened temporarily while permitting issues and supply chain issues are addressed. Work will begin once all permits are in place. For more detailed information on this project or to see construction updates, please visit bjwsa.org.
Work also continues on the BJWSA galvanized water main replacement project.
This is a multi-year project aimed at improving water quality in older areas of the water system where there are galvanized water mains. The work includes installing new PVC water mains, fire hydrants, water services, and meter boxes. The replacement of water service lines to customers is provided only to the meter. BJWSA will not be replacing any water services on private property between the meter and the house.
In the current phase of the work, new lines have been laid on Harrington and North, and work to tie in the new lines to the existing system is underway. Water main work on Emmons, Laudonniere, LeChere, Church, and Calhoun Streets is complete with final paving still to come.
Remaining streets in this phase include Whitefield Street, Capers Street, and Center Drive West. Once the lines are replaced, there should be notable water quality and water pressure improvements.
