May 25 update on North Street main project

May 25, 2022

The Spanish Moss Trail has reopened between Robert Smalls Parkway and North Street for the North Street Transmission Main project. Most of work to lay the new water main along the Spanish Moss Trail has been completed, but there will be a few days in the next few months where the trail may be closed again for some final work.

In the meantime, crews work to install the large-diameter water transmission main along North Street from Ribault Road to Hamar Street and then Duke Street. Work is being coordinated with the homeowners and businesses along the route, as well as Beaufort Elementary School.  For more detailed information on this project or to see construction updates, please visit the bjwsa.org.

Main replacement update

Work also continues on the BJWSA galvanized water main replacement project. This is a multi-year project aimed at improving water quality in older areas of the water system where there are galvanized water mains. Work includes installing new PVC water mains, fire hydrants, water services, and meter boxes. Once the lines are replaced, there should be notable water quality and water pressure improvements.

In the current phase of the construction work, new water mains have been installed on sections of Emmons, Laudonniere, LeChere, Calhoun, Capers, Center Drive West Church, Harrington, S. Hermitage, North, and Whitefield. Final tie-in work remains at West Street and North Street. Construction is ongoing in the Port Royal vicinity. The next phase of the galvanized pipe replacement program, the remaining roads in the Pigeon Point neighborhood, is under design.  It is anticipated that the construction of these roads will begin in the fall.
