Work continues on the BJWSA North Street Transmission main project as crews make the connection between the new large-diameter water transmission main to the existing water main in Robert Smalls Parkway. Once that connection is complete and tested, the Spanish Moss Trail will be reopened between Robert Smalls Parkway and North Street. Near the end of the project this summer, the trail will be temporarily closed for a few days to complete the final testing and remove the testing equipment.
After the Robert Smalls Parkway connection is made, crews will return to North Street to complete the work from Ribault Road to Hamar and then Duke Street. Work is being coordinated with the homeowners and businesses along the route, as well as Beaufort Elementary School. Water main replacement project
Work also continues on the BJWSA galvanized water main replacement project. This is a multi-year project aimed at improving water quality in older areas of the water system where there are galvanized water mains. Work includes installing new PVC water mains, fire hydrants, water services, and meter boxes.
The replacement of water service lines to customers is provided only to the meter. BJWSA will not replace any water services on private property between the meter and the house. Once the lines are replaced, there should be notable water quality and water pressure improvements.
In the current phase of the construction work, new water mains have been installed on sections of Emmons, Laudonniere, LeChere, Calhoun, Capers, Center Drive West Church, Harrington, S. Hermitage, North, and Whitefield. Construction is ongoing in the Port Royal vicinity. The next phase of the galvanized pipe replacement program, the remaining roads in the Pigeon Point neighborhood, is under design. We expect that the construction of these roads will begin in the fall.
