[ARCHIVED] CANCELLED: Public invited to Mossy Oaks update on March 31

The update/meeting open to the public by the Mossy Oaks Task Force scheduled for Tuesday, March 31, 2020 at 10 AM has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a future date/time yet to be determined. This is in response to public safety concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

BEAUFORT, S.C. – The Mossy Oaks Task Force will hold a meeting on March 31 open to residents within the Mossy Oaks neighborhood, as well as the general public, to discuss the latest updates and proposed plans designed to improve the current drainage system.

The meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at City Council Chambers, 1911 Boundary St. It will begin with a one-hour presentation followed by a question and answer period.

In 2019, the City of Beaufort began Phase 1 of a project to improve storm water drainage in the Mossy Oaks neighborhood, which has suffered from repeated flooding. Among other work, portions of the Jane Way Canal in Basin 1 were cleaned out.

The City has spent approximately $356,000 on Phase 1 work in both the Basin 1 and Basin 2 areas, funded primarily through a general obligation bond. Other funds for Basin 1 will come from a $1 million Community Development Block Grant; a $500,000 grant from the South Carolina Rural & Infrastructure Authority is targeted for Basin 2.

Beaufort will soon advertise for bid the remaining work needed in both Basins 1 and 2. The City anticipates the construction for Phase 2 to begin in June or July.

The Mossy Oaks Task Force is comprised of political and appointed leaders from the State of South Carolina, Beaufort County, the City of Beaufort, and the Town of Port Royal as well as homeowners, conservation groups, and a utility service provider.

Parking is available in the lots surrounding City Hall. For additional questions, please contact the City of Beaufort at 843-525-7015 during business hours.
