Update from BJWSA to residents of Beaufort"

Beaufort Jasper Water and Sewer Authority (BJWSA) has several capital improvement projects located in the City of Beaufort where the public may see workers in the near future.

For the past couple of years, BJWSA has been replacing galvanized water lines in an effort to improve water quality, water pressure, and water flow. Due to the large number of galvanized pipes in the water system, the work has been divided into phases.  This work will be completed over several years and in different areas of the water system.

Construction of the Galvanized Water Line Replacement Program – Phase II, will begin in January. This work will impact water lines serving homes near Pigeon Point, Mossy Oaks, Port Royal, City of Beaufort and various other Beaufort County locations. The pipe replacement is only to the water meter; it does not include replacing any water services on private property. Customers may have random and brief water quality issues during construction. This should be rare, but your water may appear dirty. If you do have yellow- to brown-colored water, you should run the tap for a few minutes to bring fresh water to your house.

The North Street Water Transmission Main project has begun design, and field crews can be seen working along the project route. The new water main will be located along portions of the Spanish Moss Trail (between Robert Smalls Parkway and North Street), North Street (to Hamar Street), and Hamar Street (to Duke Street). This project will improve the flow of water in the area and help BJWSA to better serve our customers who are not close to the water treatment plant.

This work has been bid as a design-build project. Barge Design Solutions is the engineer, and Ruby Collins will be constructing to new water main. Construction for this work is expected to start in the summer of 2021 and run through July 2022.

Another utility project starting in early 2021 is the Ribaut Road Waterline Replacement project.   Although BJWSA is finishing the scope of work for this project, it is expected that field crews and surveyors from the engineering firm will begin working in late January to early February. The project goes between Reynolds Street and North Street. It is expected the project will be bid in 2021 and construction will start in late 2021.

We at BJWSA thank you for your help and understanding as we work on these projects. If you have any questions or concerns about the work, please contact Capital Projects Manager Jeremy Sponseller at 843-987-8075 or jeremy.sponseller@bjwsa.org.
