[ARCHIVED] City prepares for Hurricane Ian

BEAUFORT, S.C. (Sept. 26, 2022) –  The City of Beaufort is gearing up for the possible arrival of Hurricane Ian later this week.

According to the latest briefing of the National Weather Service – Charleston, Ian’s greatest impacts are likely to be felt Thursday into Friday, with risks for moderate to heavy rainfall, coastal flooding, gusty winds, and isolated tornadoes. 

This week, the City’s Public Works Department will:

  • Inspect generators at City buildings
  • Check all City facilities
  • Fill sandbags for City buildings
  • Check pumps and staging
  • Inspect pond levels and estuaries for need for pumping
  • Inspect and prepare major outfalls and tidal gates
  • Remove loose items from various parks
  • Inspect all drainage ditches, culverts and catch basins
  • Inspect all City roads

The Beaufort County Emergency Management Division is the lead agency in Beaufort County that will coordinate decisions related to evacuations, shelters, etc., if that becomes necessary. You can find its Storm Center page here: https://bcso.net/storm-center.
