[ARCHIVED] Three cheers for our Public Works team!

PublicWorks team

BEAUFORT, S.C. (May 18, 2020) – Their jobs can be messy and dirty and often difficult.

But without them, residents of the City of Beaufort would be at a loss.

The Public Works Department – which includes 24 employees who work in parks, facilities, streets and drainage, traffic and fleet maintenance – keeps the City of Beaufort’s streets and parks clean, street lights working, and storm drains and ditches cleared.

It’s National Public Works Week – a fitting week to celebrate our Public Works team. “We are grateful for the dedicated team at Public Works,” said Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling. “They are vital to the operations of our City.”

In 2019, Public Works employees cleaned up debris left in the wake of Hurricane Dorian, replaced the roof on the bathrooms at the Marina, installed two catch basins on Aster Street, planted new palm trees on Craven Street, hung the Stars and Stripes on the Woods Memorial Bridge, and jollied up the City during the Christmas holidays with street decorations.

The team removed over 200,000 tons of debris after various storms. But they don’t wait until after storms hit – workers are out beforehand cleaning up storm drains and ditches to try to prevent flooding. Before Dorian, the Public Works bought and filled sandbags, which they handed out for free to City residents and businesses.

In any major infrastructure project in the City, such as the current Mossy Oaks stormwater project, Public Works is essential to the operations.

And as the City began to shut down during the work-or-home Covid-19 restrictions, Public Works made sure playgrounds, public boat landings and docks, and public restrooms were clean and closed down.

“The team at Public Works in many ways are ambassadors for the City – out in the neighborhoods, responsive to residents and businesses, fixing problems. We appreciate all they do,” Mayor Keyserling sai.
