[ARCHIVED] City awarded grant to repair Carnegie Library Building windows

Carnegie Library building

BEAUFORT, S.C. – The City of Beaufort has been awarded a grant of $188,500 from the South Carolina Historic Preservation Office to restore windows at the Carnegie Library Building that were damaged by both Hurricanes Matthew and Irma.

The Carnegie Library Building, which is owned by the City, opened in 1918, one of more than 1,600 public libraries across the United States funded by steel industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. It is a contributing structure in the Beaufort Historic District. The building now houses the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce.

During both hurricanes, water intrusion damaged the building, including many of the 29 windows.

The grant, which does not require a match, will allow the City to assess, restore and/or replace as needed the building’s windows.
