[ARCHIVED] Political/election signs: What’s allowed in the City of Beaufort

Vote 2020

BEAUFORT, S.C. – As we enter election season, the City of Beaufort has some reminders about what is allowed in terms of political/election signs.

  • Political signs do not require permits to be posted.
  • Signs can be posted within 60 days of an election and are permitted on private property only, and only with the permission of the property owner.
  • Property on the curb side of a sidewalk is generally right of way, and signs cannot be posted there.
  • Property on the building side of a sidewalk is private, and signs can be posted there.
  • If there are no sidewalks, telephone poles are a good gauge as to where private property ends and the right of way begins.
  • Signs should be removed within 7 days after the election.

These rules ONLY apply to the City of Beaufort. Beaufort County has its own regulations about signs.

For the upcoming election, signs can be posted beginning Sept. 4. Any questions can be directed to Codes Enforcement Officer Ken Meola, kmeola@cityofbeaufort.org.
