BEAUFORT, S.C. (Feb. 29, 2024) – The findings of the National Park Service’s recently released Condition and Integrity Study for the Beaufort National Historic Landmark District affirm that “the district’s original character remains, with many contribution resources retaining a high degree of integrity.”

“Preserving the integrity of our Historic District is crucial for maintaining the fabric of our city,” said Mayor Phil Cromer “An unbiased assessment, such as the one carried out by the National Park Service, can provide valuable guidance for shaping our decisions and actions to safeguard its unique character.”

The National Park Service began the study in August of 2021. It contracted with LG2 Environmental Solutions, Inc., and Ethos Preservation to conduct the in-depth study, which involved extensive research, meetings with various stakeholders, including City of Beaufort staff and the Historic Beaufort Foundation, extensive fieldwork, and a survey along with public outreach and meetings.

The  108-page study, plus appendices, was released along with a press release on Feb. 22.

“The Beaufort National Historic Landmark District remains an outstanding example of American history and culture,” said Alesha Cerny, historian with the NPS National Historic Landmarks Program. “It also faces preservation challenges. With the information collected in this study, the community can better understand and protect the district’s unique character that makes it such a special place to live in and visit. We look forward to assisting the community as it continuously works to achieve its preservation goals.”

The project listed these “character-defining features” as essential to the National Historic Landmark District:

  • Small, intimate scale of the built environment
  • Architectural diversity
  • Natural setting
  • Historic association with African American, Civil War and Reconstruction history
  • Variable density within the district

The study concluded with several recommendations, many of which the City of Beaufort has already implemented or is working on. “We appreciate the comprehensive examination of the district, and we are pleased to note that numerous recommendations align with initiatives already in progress.,” said city manager Scott Marshall.
