BEAUFORT, S.C. (Aug. 4, 2024) – The City of Beaufort is preparing for potential and significant rain impacts this coming week from Tropical Storm Debby. We urge our residents and businesses to do the same.
According to both the National Weather Service and the SC Emergency Management Division:
“Potentially historic heavy rainfall is expected across portions of South Carolina through Friday morning (including Beaufort County), which will likely result in areas of severe and widespread flash and urban flooding. Significant river flooding is also expected. The current forecast includes widespread 10-20 inches of rain, with totals nearing 30 inches along the southern SC coast, including Jasper, Beaufort, Colleton, and Charleston Counties, through Friday morning. The Weather Prediction Center has highlighted eastern South Carolina as having moderate risk (level 3 of 4) of flash flooding Monday through Friday, with a high risk (level 4 of 4) for flash flooding on Tuesday along coastal South Carolina. Heavy rainfall and extreme flash flooding is the greatest threat to South Carolina from Tropical Storm Debby.
“In addition to the heavy rainfall and flooding threat, storm surge and strong winds are also possible as Debby approaches South Carolina. With the current forecast track, tropical storm force winds are expected beginning 8 p.m. on Monday for our southern coast and 8 a.m. on Wednesday for our northern coast. There is potential for 1 to 3 feet of storm surge inundation over normally dry tidal/near tidal regions.”
Updates from the City of Beaufort
- Capital Waste will service Monday’s route as normal. All residents are asked to have their cans out and ready to be serviced in the morning. After service is complete they should bring the cans away from the curb and on their property.
- The Tuesday - Friday routes may be affected due to the wind and flooding. We will update you as the conditions change.
- The Greenery is removing the tables, chairs & trash cans from the Waterfront Park Monday morning. Trash cans will also be removed from Bay Street to Craven Street. Public restrooms will remain open until 5 p.m. Monday.
Public Works Department
The Public Works Department is working diligently to prepare for the storm. Among the checks it is doing:
- Inspecting tidal gates for proper operation
- Inspecting all outfalls, and removing debris or obstructions
- Checking streets and drains for trouble spots
- Inspecting pond levels to determine if they need to be lowered
- Inspecting each park for loose debris, check on drains
